CHAPTER 9 - NOTHING WAS THE SAME

TWO WEEKS LATER

PHOENIX

"Phoenix!" Gia screamed as she opened her door.

"Surprise!" I yelled throwing my arms around my best friend. I immediately rubbed her stomach. "Aww, look at the little belly."

She smiled as she moved aside and let me in. "I'm so glad you're here! Now you can be my date to Chopper's party tomorrow night."

I walked in her house and straight into her kitchen. "I forgot all about that! Sure, I'll go. I never want to miss an opportunity to shit on a few bitches." I looked in her refrigerator and frowned when I saw mostly healthy food.

"The theme is Harlem Nights. Hey, you should come shopping with me and Mariah today."

I walked into the pantry and pulled out a bag of Doritos. "Mariah? I thought y’all weren't talking."

"She apologized to me for overreacting so I let it go," she replied. I took a bite of the chip and rolled my eyes. Gia was too damn nice sometimes.

"I guess," I replied.

"Please Phoenix?" she pouted.

"Bitch, fix your face. I'm coming," I said. It's not that I didn’t like Mariah, I just don’t think it's a good idea to be in the same room with her. I mean, she is dating a man I have so much history with.

"Yay! It will be fun, she's a nice girl," said Gia.

"Leave it to you, everybody's a nice person," I replied, walking out of the kitchen. "Which reminds me, I used the picture you sent me of Sexy Dreads to run a background check on him."

"Phoenix!"

"What?" I asked. "Benefits of being a detective's daughter. So you want the scoop or not?"

"Of course, dish!" she laughed. We walked over and sat down at her kitchen table.

I reached into my Louie bag and grabbed my phone. "His name is Mekhi Rodrick Hayes, better known as Rocko. He doesn't have a criminal record besides being arrested for a DUI when he was twenty-one. He pretty much went MIA in 2007, no records of having a job or anything in his name."

"That was eight years ago, when he his fiancé died. She was pregnant with his baby. He told me that he pretty much went under the radar then. Working as an artist to make ends meet," she said. The look on her face made me smile. I almost commented on his job, or lack thereof, but decided it wasn't worth it. Gia was finally happy and it made me happy.

"You seem really happy, Gia." I said, loving this new glow about her.

"I am. Girl, he's amazing. He prays with me, he encourages me to be happy and to eat better-"

"Girl, you're pregnant. Now is the time to pig out!" I said.

"I do, I buy most of that for him. He comes over every weekend and we have movie nights or game nights," she gushed.

"How's the dick?" I asked.

"We haven't had sex yet," she said sadly.

"That's awful. Why not?" I asked.

"He's so respectful. He said he wants us to get to know each other first.
